After an amazing trip to Japan in August 2012. Mad Munchkin Productions co-founders Laura Wilhelm and Alan Pagel came back to the company brimming with their experience and eager to create a show that would bring some of their impressions of the Japanese culture to the stage.
“There are so many stark and wonderful contrasts in Japan- the ancient next to the hyper technological, the teenie-tiny next to the enormous,” says Artistic Director Laura Wilhelm. “But no matter what, in every aspect of life, the Japanese pay attention to design and everything is done with intention and purpose. Every garden, every home, every meal. The details are important and the meaning is attended to. I was so impressed and awed by it all. You are meant to experience everything with a certain care and effect.”
This is where the discussion began at the company’s initial brainstorming sessions. Take those conversations about intention and consequence, add a dash of Edo period Japanese literature, and a crazy cast of insects… (Yup- BUGS!) and wha-lah! A new original Mad Munchkin creation is born!
Paper Garden: Entomos will open on March 22nd, 2013 in NE Minneapolis with 12 performances closing on March 30th. Stay tuned for updates on the designs, puppet build, rehearsals, and how you can get your tickets! You won’t want to miss out on this unique new show!
